King’s Day- what it is and how can you celebrate?
If you are working in the Netherlands, you will probably hear people talking about Koningsdag (King’s Day)- one of the biggest and most colorful celebrations in the country. For many Dutch people, it’s their favorite day of the year. And the good news? Everyone is welcome to join!
King’s Day is the national holiday celebrating the birthday of King Willem Alexander. It is celebrated every year on 27th April (or 26th April if the 27th falls on a Sunday). On this day the whole country turns orange and people celebrate together in the streets. You can expect parties, music, markets, and festivals everywhere. Most people do not work on King’s Day, and cities feel like one big outdoor celebration!
When you will be out on the streets on that day you can think: “Why everything is orange? Color comes from the Dutch royal family: the House of Orange Nassau. On King’s Day, people show national pride by wearing orange clothes, funny hats, flags, face paint and orange-colored accessories.
Along with the dressing tradition you can also expect Vrijmarkt (Free Market). This is one of the most unique traditions! Anyone can sell things on the street without a permit. You’ll see people selling clothes, toys, books, food, and handmade items. Children often perform music or games to earn a few euros. It’s fun to walk around, watch, buy something small, and feel a part of Dutch life!
Of course, the main part of the event is music! Streets are filled with scenes and DJs. Even cafés and bars move their tables outside to be part of the celebration! Big cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Arnhem host festivals. Smaller towns celebrate too often more relaxed and family friendly.
Big part of King’s Day is also food and snacks- like in every Dutch celebration! You will be able to find many places with fries, burgers, hot dogs, Dutch snacks like kroketten and frikandellen, beer and soft drinks. Eat outside, stand at a table, meet people – it’s all about celebrating together! It is a perfect opportunity for international workers to meet new people!
This holiday is also, one of the easiest moments to feel part of the Netherlands, even if you are here temporarily. You don’t need to “know someone” or speak perfect Dutch. Just be a part of the event and enjoy! Even one or two hours outside, walking around, eating something, listening to music, can turn a normal day into a great memory!
So if you’re in the Netherlands around 27 April – don’t stay home. Put on something orange, go outside, and experience King’s Day like a local. 🧡
