Carnival in the Netherlands- what is it and how to spend it as an international worker?
Every February, something special happens in the Netherlands! Cities turn into colorful parades with people dressed in costumes and streets filled with music, local snacks, dancing and attractions! This is CARNIVAL, one of the biggest and most joyful traditions in Dutch culture.
For many international workers, Carnival is a completely new experience. Whether you’re from Poland, Romania, Portugal, Spain, or anywhere else, this festival is a great chance to relax, meet people, and enjoy Dutch culture in a fun way.
Carnival is a traditional celebration that takes place before the Christian fasting period. In the Netherlands this occasion is celebrated in a less religious way. Here it is more a huge cultural event and an occasion to have some fun and let go of everyday stress.
Carnival is mainly celebrated in the South of the country, but people from all over the Netherlands are visiting to celebrate. Funny outfits, wigs, costumes and music are bringing people across the whole country together!
If you are working in the Netherlands for the first time or somehow you never experienced this tradition, we strongly suggest that you spend your free weekend outside and see it yourself! It is a great way to meet new people, experience local culture and have a bit of fun after a successful week of work! Here are few tips to truly enjoy it:
- Wear something colorful! You don’t need to dress in a costume but even a bright T-shirt will make you feel more like a part of the group!
- Have some cash with you- in small bars or food stands it could be necessary to pay in cash
- Bring a friend or try to meet someone new! It is fun to celebrate together
- Try local snacks!
- Respect the atmosphere! If you are respectful towards people celebrating, you will be welcome everywhere with open arms!
For many international workers, Carnival becomes one of their favorite Dutch traditions. It’s colorful, friendly, and full of positive energy- a perfect moment to relax and enjoy life outside of work. If you’re in the Netherlands during Carnival, don’t stay home! So, if you’re free between 15-17 February- put on something colorful, join the crowd, and experience a celebration you’ll never forget!
